Welcome to the Hervey Bay Special School Library News Page
We are extremely fortunate at our school to have a wonderful library that contains many resources for both students and staff to access.  Students come to our school library to learn in a different environment and to practise skills they can transfer to the community, for example, when they access the town library.
Students can explore our Junior Fiction section which contains picture books from a range of authors. These books are colour coded green and sequenced in alphabetical order. We also have a small selection of board books, coloured coded yellow, for our younger or sensory students to explore. Older students can discover both the Senior Fiction area, which is colour coded purple and sequenced in alphabetical order, as well as, the Non-Fiction area which has an ever increasing range of non-fiction books and is colour coded orange.

In addition to all these amazing books, students can also access six to seven computers and a large whiteboard to project whole class learning objects.  Students enjoy accessing the computers in both class time and during their supervised play times when the library welcomes students for quiet play, reading, listening and technology.
The library also offers games, music, a listening post with audio books, fine motor activities such as loom banding, cutting, colouring and other art and craft activities. Students find coming to the library a quiet, calming and yet stimulating environment where staff can interact with them in both formal and informal learning conversations.
For teachers and teacher aides, the library has an increasing range of Teacher Reference materials that can be located at the rear of the building. These resources cover all key learning areas and provide teachers with both paper and hands on activities for students to experience and explore.
The library catalogue system, Libcode, is providing students with exciting ways to research unit topics or topics of interest. Students can generate a library search at home using the school website, or additionally, in their classrooms. This is also a wonderful resource for teachers, providing a link to a range of activities, learning objects, worksheets, e-books, interactive websites and other resources which make learning fun for the students at our school.
Please feel free to come in and explore our library and ask questions of our wonderful aide Maria (teacher aide for library) or Nicci (librarian and class teacher). We look forward to showing you around!
