The Disability Discrimination Act (1992) and the Disability Standards for Education (2005) require education providers to support the rights of students with disability to access the curriculum “on the same basis” as students without disability. Students with disability are entitled to rigorous, relevant and engaging learning opportunities drawn from age equivalent Australian Curriculum content on the same basis as students without disability. (ACARA 2013) 

At Hervey Bay Special School we value lifelong learning and believe that EVERY child can learn.   Our team of highly professional teachers work collaboratively with teacher aides, therapists, external agencies, families and the wider community to ensure students are engaged, challenged and supported in their learning as they work towards becoming as independent as possible and active citizens in their communities.  
 

At Hervey Bay Special School mandated Australian Curriculum is delivered in the areas of English, Mathematics, Science, Visual Arts and Health and Physical Education. Students from Prep level (Foundation) to Year 10 have access to curriculum under a  whole school approach whilst taking into account each student’s ability and what they know and can do.

Curriculum in core learning areas is delivered to students using the Students with Disabilities Curriculum to Classroom (C2C) units of work.  Learning experiences are differentiated for each student and are delivered and assessed at each individual’s level of ability whilst retaining an age appropriate and engaging context for learning.

In 2017 all staff undertook training in the Four Blocks Approach to Literacy delivered by expert Jane Farrell. The philosophy underpinning Four Blocks is that “no student is too anything to be able to read and write” (David Yoder 2000).  All students are given opportunities to read and write using either traditional and/or alternative access to literacy and communication.
In addition to the mandated curriculum, and as part of their Individual Student Plans, every student has identified individual goals and strategies which are developed collaboratively with parents and carers.

Visitors to our classroom and school will find students engaged in a multitude of activities from academic studies, home science, visual arts,  Health and Physical Education, swimming, Riding for the Disabled, Gymzoonasium, sensory programs, social and personal skills development, gardening, and work experience programs and certificate courses (within the Senior Secondary juncture.) At all levels within the school, communication skills are a priority and we have worked closely with our Speech Language Pathologist in developing a Whole School Communication Framework to ensure the teaching of communication skills are targeted to each student’s level of need and ability.
