School staff enhance their ICT skills

25/10/2012
While students enjoyed an extra long weekend, Hervey Bay Special School staff joined with staff from Gympie, Bundaberg and Maryborough Special Schools improving their ICT skills at a combined special schools conference in Maryborough.  The ICT leadership team at school organised the day which included a keynote speech and workshops by Education Queensland leading adaptive tech 'guru' Jeff Souter.  We were extremely lucky to hear about the future trends and practices’ in the fast developing world of ICT, even if reminiscing  on some obsolete models made some of us feel old and the younger members of the audience laugh! The day catered for staff with all levels of skills with opportunities throughout the day to; ‘play’ on new apps to identify their suitability for students, improve the use of iPads in the classroom as a learning and communication tool, identify suitable adaptive technologies for specific disabilities and even how to better manage their own time using professional iPad apps.
While the opportunity to share a full day learning from Jeff Souter was a great opportunity, much of the days success was due to the number of class teachers, many from the North Coast Region Special Education ICT network, who shared how they are using adaptive technology in their special school classrooms, many including our own Sue Thompson was presenting at a conference for the first time – Congratulations Sue on doing such a good job.
The most consistent feedback from the day was that staff across the special schools would like the opportunity share professional development more often.  The true success of the day will be in the coming weeks as staff implement their new digital pedagogical skills in their classrooms.
