School gyms are well used by students

29/04/2013
Hervey Bay Special School students can keep fit and healthy in the schools two gyms. More than 20 students have IEP specific goals that relate to the use of the gyms making them an essential part of the school. The Queensland Government’s Smart Moves initiative requires that students be outside and active for a minimum of 30 minutes per day and the school gyms are a great way to achieve this. The gyms are stocked with a variety of different weights, machines and cardio equipment to suit a wide range of abilities that the school caters for. Participating in gym sessions is great for students to learn to encourage each other and learn about team work. Gym skills are great for helping to develop coordination and gross motor skills. Learning about how to use gym equipment and gym etiquette is a valuable tool that students can use after they finish school to keep them active in the community.
The school hopes to one day expand the gyms into its own area with more space as things are starting to get a bit cramped now that we have so much great equipment. However we are always looking to upgrade and get more brand new equipment for our students to use. The gyms have become so popular within the school that you can find 3 or more classes using them at the one time, that’s about 20 students. The gyms are also a fantastic way to keep all the staff fit so they can keep up with the students.
