Class fishing program

This term group 11 started their community access fishing program. The program involves four main elements:
1. Classroom based lessons focussing on responsible fishing practices, fishing terminology,  main species of fish caught, reasons for “catch and release” policies and bag/size limits.
2. Practical sessions  on rigging fishing lines and casting/retrieval of line techniques. Also fish handling techniques.
3. Fishing from the three main piers in Hervey Bay.
4. Preparing, cooking and eating suitable fish.
At our first fishing trip to Urangan Pier on Tuesday we managed to net two fish. A toad fish and a whiting which is our preferred targeted species. Both were caught and released. Conditions were difficult due to the wind and we are looking forward to more favourable conditions this week.
